Telluride Do's and Don'ts

Telluride, a stunningly beautiful historic town in the San Juan Mountains of western Colorado, is a popular tourist destination in the summer for its many arts festivals and in the winter for its superb skiing. If you're planning on visiting Telluride, you'll want to keep this list of do's and don'ts in mind.

  1. DO ride the gondola. The Telluride Gondola, which connects the town of Telluride with the Mountain Village at the top of the mountain, is free, and will provide you with some of the most amazing views you'll see anywhere. You can take your skis, snowboards and bikes onboard, too. Just remember, the gondola closes at midnight.
  2. DO attend a film festival. The world famous Telluride Film Festival, founded almost 40 years ago, takes place every Labor Day weekend. Even if you don't have passes, you can buy tickets to individual films or attend many of the free events. But don't forget the other film festivals that come to town: Mountainfilm, held every Memorial Day weekend; and the Telluride Horror Show held every October.
  3. DON'T push yourself too hard at first. Telluride is 8,750 feet above sea level, which means there's far less oxygen in the air than you're probably used to. Give yourself a couple of days to take it easy and acclimate. And make sure to drink plenty of water to help avoid altitude sickness and headaches.
  4. DO catch a movie at the Nugget Theatre. After all, how often do you get to see today's hit movies in a building dating back to 1892? Make sure to ask for real butter on your popcorn.
  5. DO hike to Bridal Veil Falls. The trail starts in the southeast corner of town, and takes you to the foot of the waterfall in just 1.2 miles. The hike is moderate, but wait till you've acclimated to try it.
  6. DO learn a little of Telluride's history. Almost the entire town has been designated a natural historic district, and you'll feel as if you've stepped back in time just walking down Colorado Boulevard. Make sure to spot the plaque marking the spot where Butch Cassidy committed his first bank robbery!
  7. DON'T spend too much time inside. Even if you came to Telluride to get away from it all and get some work done, make sure you take in the incredible natural beauty surrounding you.
