Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves

Historical Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves is one of the most popular family attractions that Glenwood Springs, Colorado, has to offer. Three underground caves produce a geothermal steam from hot mineral waters, just as they have for centuries. The temperature inside the caves runs between 110 and 112 degrees Fahrenheit. Amazingly, these hot springs and vapor caves are the only ones of their kind found in the world.

Tourists flock to Glenwood Springs for the natural sauna and the revitalizing effects of the 34 minerals that are naturally in the water. Breathing in the warm vapor provides a therapeutic detox as built-up impurities sweat out of the body. In addition, the serene stillness of the darkly lit caverns creates a perfect haven to melt away stress.

Relaxing on marble slabs, which line the perimeter of the caves, are mixed with cooling sessions in a tranquil solarium or outside on the private patio. Lounge chairs, lush green plants and cucumber, lemon or strawberry water are provided to cool down, either inside or outside.

Originally used by the Ute Indians to restore their health and well-being, the Vapor Caves are named Yampah, which is the Ute Indian's word for medicine. The addition of cool marble benches is the only change that has been made to the vapor caves since it became the Yampah spa in the 1880s.

The entrance to the caves is through the Yampah Spa building, which offers optional body treatments: massage, cucumber facials, salt-scrubs, oxygen treatments and private mineral baths infused with herbs. Same-day manicures, pedicures, and hair salon services are by appointment. Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves offers a full line of beauty enhancements including AVEDA salon products and services.

Locker rooms are available for storage of clothing and personal items while visitors enjoy the facilities. Upon entry, guests receive a robe, a towel, and flip-flops for use in the vapor caves. However, bringing your own is perfectly acceptable, and remember to bring your swimsuit.

After hiking or bicycling in the area, visitors love the foot reflexology service, herbal body massage, and a soak in the private mineral baths. Reservations are not required for the Yampah Vapor Caves but are recommended. Various specials are available each month, as well as treatment packages, all at discounted prices. Finding Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, is easy, and there is plenty of parking.
