Getting to and around Durango

Durango is the largest city in La Plata County, Colorado. It is in an area that is home to picturesque mountains and valleys, and the city itself hosts a number of festivals and events. It is also a mountain home for shopping, art, outdoor sports and much more that draws tourists by the thousand every year. It is very easy to get to by air or by ground, and navigating the city is also quite simple.

The easiest way to reach Durango is to simply board an airplane and fly into the city. The Durango-La Plata Airport offers service from four major airlines and receives flights from major hubs in Denver, Phoenix, Arizona, and Dallas, Texas. Once you arrive at the airport, rental car desks are available from providers such as Avis, Hertz, Budget, Enterprise, and National.

By highway, Durango is also easy to reach. It is located, by ground, 24 miles from Ignacio, 46 miles from Cortiez, 48 miles from Silverton, and 118 miles from Telluride. The city is located on the San Juan Skyway, a 233-mile long "National Scenic and Historic Byway" that takes travelers through the San Juan Mountains. Durango can be found in the southeast portion of the scenic road where U.S. Highway 160 intersects with U.S. Highway 550. Regardless of whether you enter from the north, south, east, or west, you will enter Durango on one of these main highways.

Most major landmarks and things to do in Durango are located on Highway 550. This makes traversing the city on your own by personal or rented vehicle very simple. There are also several other unique ways to get around the city. The Durango T Local Transit Service operates buses that stop at designated areas around the city, and primarily along Highway 550, ever 20 to 30 minutes.

The paved Animas River Trail also runs throughout the entire city, allowing energetic tourists to walk or bike their way through while taking in the sights and sounds. Rafts may also be rented to allow you to float your way down the river that runs along Durango's main thoroughfare. Finally, you may choose to ride a trolley service that runs regular routes and picks up passengers at all of the bus stop locations throughout the city, as well.
