What to Pack

If you are planning your first ski trip to Aspen, Colorado, you may be wondering what to pack. Your individual needs may vary, but in this article we will discuss a few simple things that you will not want to be without.

As you probably already know, Aspen is cold! Temperatures rarely rise above 80 degrees in the summer and can drop as low as 7 degrees in the dead of winter, which is when you will likely be visiting to ski. The climate is general lacking in humidity and can feel even colder when the wind blows, so arriving with a lot of warm gear in tow is definitely your best option. Packing plenty of pieces that can be layered, along with a few dressier items, will ensure that you are both comfortable on the slopes and while relaxing in the lodge or out to dinner. The atmosphere in Aspen is generally very laid-back and natural, so a simple dress or casual slacks and shirt are considered suitable attire at most restaurants.

When it comes to ski gear, you can either bring your own or rent everything after you arrive. If you choose to bring your own, be sure to include a helmet, goggles or sunglasses, skis or a snowboard, boots, gloves and poles. If you arrive by plane, you may want to consider shipping your gear ahead of time so that it is waiting at your hotel when you get there. This can often save you money and hassle when compared to checking these items as baggage on the plane.

One important toiletry that many people forget about is sunscreen. The sun is just as strong in winter and its light bounces off the snow, which means that your skin is being bombarded with UV rays from both above and below you during your time on the slopes. A sunscreen with an SPF of 75 or higher is important if you plan on spending a significant amount of time skiing. Getting a painful sunburn on the first day of your vacation will surely put a damper on the rest of your trip, so be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen and reapply it every few hours while you are outside. Considering that the air can be very dry and harsh on the lips, bringing along a quality lip balm with built-in sun protection is a good idea too.
