Aspen Recreational Activities

Aspen, Colorado is known around the world for its legendary downhill skiing and snowboarding. There are four mountains in the immediate area, so extreme winter sports opportunities abound.

For those that want to take in the outdoors at a slower pace, there are hundreds of trails to enjoy around Aspen. During the winter, snowshoe hikes and cross-country skiing are the methods of choice to get out and about. During the spring and summer, the same trails become ideal for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. Campsites are in no short supply, either. Whether you prefer the comfort and relaxation of car camping or the challenge and isolation of backpacking, they're not hard to find.

As the snow melts, the rivers swell and become a playground for adventure seekers. There is a slew of whitewater rafting companies that lead expeditions in the spring and summer for all skill levels. Canoeing and paddle boarding are also common on calmer stretches of rivers and lakes.

If you prefer to stay on shore, it is possible to fish Aspen's lakes and streams year round. It is one of the city's most popular sports, so gear and local knowledge of the best fishing holes are in no short supply.

If it's a natural dose of relaxation that you want then there is a number of natural hot springs to dip into in breathtaking surroundings. If you are more for the indoors then there are plenty of spas and health clubs that will pamper you to no end.

Aspen is great for kids, too. The Aspen Center for Environmental Studies leads education hikes and a summer program for kids. It's a great chance for them to get outside, get some exercise, and learn about nature from some experts. For more indoor summer fun, the Aspen Art Museum offers art workshops for kids during the summer.

For a wholly unique view of Aspen and the Rockies, you can take a hot air balloon ride. Ballooning is an especially popular way to see the area during the fall and get a birds-eye view of the leaves changing and coloring the landscape in an unforgettable way. If you want to stay a little closer to the ground, there are a number of zip line courses throughout the surrounding forest. The tours are great for all ages of adventurers.
